Microsoft has developed and now testing a free anti-virus application for Windows.  The name of this generous piece of software is “Microsoft Security Essentials”. Microsoft claims that this program was developed as a replacement for their subscription based anti-virus program known as “Live One Care” which was 49.95 per year.  If they can offer the protection, we may soon be free of annual subscription fees.

Security Essentials is currently in beta and full.  We’ll let you know as soon as its open again for download.

For more information on Microsoft Security Essentials check out Microsoft’s Blog Site or the Security Essentials site.

*UPDATE: Microsoft’s link is closed at the present but Security Essentials can be downloaded via Softpedia.

What is Windows 7?

Windows XP, Vista, and now, Windows 7 is Microsoft’s latest operating system.

The previews look clean and simple.  I’ve been impressed with everything I’ve seen and read.  Check out great screenshots, and a few videos here.

More details…
Currently called Windows 7, it will be all that Vista should have been,  without the annoyances.  Windows 7 was announced late last year, and Microsoft recently released a public beta.  Although officially it should be available late 2009, early 2010, many speculate it will be available mid-2009.

To find out exactly which Windows version you’re running, follow these steps:

  1. Click  Start
  2. Click  Run (if you don’t see it, skip this step)
  3. Type:  winver
  4. Hit  ENTER

A reader asked, “How do I permanently change my view when I open documents? Meaning, when I open an attached document, it always opens in “reading layout” and I just like to see a normal piece of paper, not a book layout. I can’t figure out how to make that change to “normal” and stay that way!”

MS Word can be annoying by always opening email attachments in their Reading Layout.  This gives you a nice overview, but isn’t “comfortable” and doesn’t allow you to edit the document.  Follow the image guide above, or the steps below:

Word 2003:
1.  Click on the Tools menu and select Options
2.  Click on the General tab
3.  Uncheck “Allow starting in the Reading Layout”
4.  Hit OK

Word 2007:
1.  Click on the Office Button / “Orb” at the top left
2.  Click Word Options at the bottom
3.  Click Popular in the left column
4.  Uncheck “Open e-mail attachments in Full Screen Reading View”
