I got a new laptop and currently have a desktop that is about 3 1/2 years old. I have my internet service with Verizon (card). A friend gave me a Linksys router. How can I connect the router to the desktop so that the laptop will connect to the internet via service with Verizon. I do not have a phone line.

    Your timing is great! :)

I just received a new digital camera. Do I need to download all the CD information from Olympus to download pictures, or is there something simpler that I can do?

How can I add my friends and family to your tips and tricks subscription? Thank you for being there. Merry Christmas!

    Jenny,

I’ve done this with a few Internet cards but not with Verizon. Keep in mind that most providers now are limiting the bandwidth, often 5GB, and charging for excess usage. This is very unfortunate… and probably won’t last long.

Regardless, what you need is Internet Connection Sharing (ICS). This is built into Windows for you and just needs configured. It isn’t a super easy task but here is a link a similar question I found online that can instructions:

Check out the responses from prohc, and jeffremus, they are the best.

For me to walk you through it remotely might be a quite a feat. If you need help, let us know and we can setup a time to take care of it for you.

    Petunia,

Good question! Its not always wise to install everything on the CD. Often they come with far more than you need that will aid in slowing down your computer. There should be a minimum or advanced installation option you can choose that will only install necessary files. Depending on your needs, this might be a better option.

You could also use a card reader (USB or sometimes built in) to download photos. This way you don’t even need to install the CD or plug the camera in. Remove the flash memory card (SD, memory stick, etc) from the camera and insert in your card reader to download.

Just have your friends contact us here, and we’ll add them to the list! Thanks always for your referrals.

    Happy Holidays, guys…
My bride bought a Blackberry Storm for me at Christmas this year. I have no clue how to set up the email so that I can receive and send from my pmlassociates.com e-mail account. Can you either help me do it, or come by and make it work for me? I will be in the office on Tuesday all day…
    Thanks to our DWZ friends…
    Terry

    Terry Dunn,

Congrats on your new Storm! We’ll be by to take care of it for you.

Hi Guys! I didn’t think I would need you this year but I guess I was wrong. I now own two items that basically do the same thing and I am having trouble with both. One is a little digital camera (a cheap model for little David) and the other is a Brookstone digital photo keychain. For some reason, my computer will not download their software or even recognize the “little” CD that has the software on it. I have downloaded a driver from the cameras website, but still no good. If I plug in the camera to my computer, the computer opens Microsoft picture manager but can’t find the camera. Any ideas on how to get my (Dell Latitude) notebook to stop messing with my head??? Thanks and Happy New Year! Catherine

  11. Josh says:

    Catherine,

Thanks for writing in! Congrats on your new toys.

Sometimes getting Windows to recognize USB devices can be a tricky. First, try uninstalling all software you installed for the camera. Next, ensure the USB cable is unplugged and reboot your computer. After restart, attach your camera via USB and turn the camera on. It should be recognized by XP with an assigned drive letter in My Computer. This should work for copying photos. If you still need the software provided, and a drive letter was assigned, remove the camera/USB connection and install the camera software.

Also, if a drive letter was assigned in My Computer, you can right click on it, choose properties, and one of the tabs (can’t remember right now) allows you to define what the drive is exactly (so that the right application starts… eg. Picture Viewer).

If the above doesn’t work, I’d be glad to take a look at it. Let me know!
